Cuban Linx 08-31-06: Publicity Stunt 101

-Barack Obama upsets Kenyan official. Truth, as they say, is bitter.

-OutKast's Idlewild enters Billboard on No. 2 behind Danity Kane. No thanks to the ambiguous marketing and promotion of what is actually their new album as a film soundtrack / album.

-50 Cent wants to collaborate with Elton John. What an original idea.
-
-Eminem apologizes to Hef's girlfriend.

-Lil' Kim is working on a book and film based on her prison life. *Yawn*

-Ice Cube blasts hip-hop, which is like AJ blasting music videos.

-2Pac's sister says she battles with suicide and depression daily.

-Shots Fired: 50 Cent vs Diddy (Audio Link) I guess Diddy is also excluded from 50's VMA Afterparty guest list now. Apparently, this is over the Ma$e issue. Plus, what better way to promote Banks' upcoming album.

Soundbites: Lupe Fiasco ft. Sway - We Love You

Lupe Fiasco featuring Sway - We Love You (mp3)

I remember hearing Lupe say that he was cooking up a Sway collabo back whenever Food & Liquor hit the nets. He supposedly has a track with some Korean rapper as well. Anyhow, you gotta love the flavor Sway brings to this. My only gripe is that it's too short.

Katrina Throwback

Initially, I was going to do a recap of what went down a year ago when Katrina wreaked its havoc in the gulf coast, but what good is it? Why go back and relive a tragedy. I'm actually more interested in seeing progress...kinda like these.

Oh yeah, Top 5 Katrina-Related Rap Songs (Listen-N-Download)

Janet Jackson's FHM Photos

While other 40-yr olds are busy trying to convince their daughters not to pose for FHM, Janet's too busy baring it all for them. Hey, at least, she's the first black person on the cover of FHM. (j/k)

Cuban Linx 08-28-06: Wamp, Wamp

Album art for Snoop Doogg's The Blue Carpet Treatment out Nov. 21

-The ever-grindin' Smoking Section has a brand new interview with 9th Wonder.

-Beyonce storms to No. 1

-Mixtape Monday: Nas says he has a 'crazy joint' with Game. Whatever, put out a single already. Also, Papoose, who recently signed a $1.5 million dollar deal with Vibe through Streetsweeper / Flipmode (wtf is that?), hopes to release Nacirema Dream before '07.

-First, David Hasselhoff[sp], now Elton John wants to record a hip-hop album.

-Foxy Brown allegedly stole 2 $400 belts from boutique.

Video: Snoop Dogg featuring B-Real - Vato

"Vato" is definitely no "Drop it Like It's Hot" but it works for me. I see us headed back to the Neptunes era, with Thelonius P and Hugo Boss producing more than half of what's out there. I don't blame Kelis for divorcing them.

Soundbites: Beyonce ft. Jay-Z - Upgrade U

Beyonce ft. Jay-Z - Upgrade U (mp3)

Exactly what I expected it to sound like. A song about...upgrading each other...yay!! Seriously, Beyonce's album is shaping up to be a disaster. By that, I don't mean that it won't sell a million copies the first few months. The six songs I've heard so far divulge a lack of direction. Picture in-and-out studio sessions...

Cuban Linx: 08-25-06: The End is Near

-According to well-respected DJ Semtex, Dr. Dre is on The Game's album. I wonder if Curtis "Interscope" Jack will get pissed off and push back The Doctor's Advocate indefinitely.

-DMX Slammed for Iraq no-show. For some reason, I'm not surprised that X pulled this crap on the troops, even though he found time to kick a free show for kids in Harlem. Not saying that the Iraq no-show was intentional, but it just seems like the sort of thing he'd do.

-Speaking of Iraq, this former U.S. Army ranger talks about the Iraqis he killed before turning his back on the war. I don't know about you, but killing harmless children at close range, and bombing folks while they're praying are no ways to liberate anyone. Is this guy a fraud?

-17-year old Lil' Romeo starts his own label, hopes to follow in Master P's footsteps.

-Xzibit set to pimp his album, Full Circle, on October 17.

-Matthew Knowles does not care about 2500 Beyonce fans.

-If finding out people's true sexuality is your thing, then this is for you.

-Top 10 Rap Albums 09-02-06: Ross still "pushing it" to the top?

-Am I the only person not feeling this collaboration?

-"Idlewild" lacks substance, or so says the Washington Times.

-Who stole Mac Dre's tombstone? And did I mentioin a big WTF!?

Soundbites: The Roots ft. Zion I - Come Together + Extras

The Roots + Zion I - Come Together (mp3)
The Roots + Zion I - Come Together (instrumental)

A big shout out to my boy Dark Poet who saw this post and declared an internet search party to help find the missing GT track, which then reminded me to go Soundbites-crazy today. I see how "Come Together" could be a decent album cut on Game Theory. But, there are several samples here, and you know how easy it is to clear those bad boys these days. Besides, do we really need that many melancholic tracks on the same album?

"Come Together" appears on The Roots/J. Period mixtape.
More odeos from that mixtape below:

-The Roots + J Period - Rock Star / PSA
-The Roots + J. Period - Thought Is Like (Freestyle)

Cuban Linx 08-24-06: Hollywood Divorce

-OutKast's Idlewild is expected to debut at No. 1 with 200,000 units next week.

-Jay-Z and Beyonce about to dole out $3 million on their wedding?

-Pranksters release real snakes in a theater showing Snakes on a Plane.

-Rev Run's daughter Angela launches her own magazine.

-Apparently, the only thing Janet Jackson likes to talk about is her sex life. *Yawn.*

-The Roots perform one song a day from Game Theory on MTV Live Leak.

Wednesday, August 23, 2006

Cuban Linx 08-23-06: I Got Cha

-Ice Cube is surprised that former N.W.A. member Yella is in the porn industry. Who wouldn't be?

-Full version of The Roots' 3-in-1 Game Theory video

-Video: Fat Joe visits Shyne in prison. Now that's gangsta.

-Snoop's Blue Carpet Treatment will now drop two weeks after The Doctor's Advocate

-Christina moves 356,000 units of Back to Basics to clinch the No. 1 spot. And...and, and I like her album. A lot. On the other hand, Obie Trice's Second Round's on Me 77,000 units at No.7.

-Busta Rhymes still not willing to co-operate with investigators. Busta has some serious issues. This man beat up a teenager for accidentally spitting on his car? Boycott his album.

-Nas signs an R&B singer to Ill Will I thought he erased that label to start The New Jones Experience. By the way whatever happened to Quan?

-If you're in the NYC area, then you need to hit upHipHopKaraoke (aka some innovative shit) .

Video: The Game - It's Okay (One Blood)

One of my favorite singles at the moment. The rastafarian in the video is Junior Reid--author of the original "One Blood"--whose voice was sampled here. I would have loved to see the "chronic smoke clears, all you see is one blood" line dramatized in slow motion, but it's all good.

Apparently, the names have been changed to protect the innocent:

Old: I ain't got beef with 50, no beef with Jay/What's beef when you gettin' head in the '63
New: You gotta beef with me if you beefin' with Dre/What's beef? Us low-ridin' in the '63

Old: What would the motherf****n west coast be without one crip and...(one blood)
New: You kill me, what would the west coast be without Snoop and...(one blood)

Old: And I ain't gotta make shit for the club, what DJ gon' turn down a .38 [slug]
New: And I ain't gotta make hits for the club; what DJ gon' turn down some groupie luv

Old: Turn on the TV and all you see is the "A"/You niggas better make up a dance if you tryin' to get radio play
New: Turn on the TV and all you see is the "A"/You better do like they do if you need radio play

And here's JT denying the thin-veiled insults on "One Blood":
"I'll say it again...I'm not dissin' the "A" -- The Game

Cuban Linx 08-22-06: The Shining

...in stores today

-C-Murder ordered back into house arrest. After being able to roam parties and events, C-M must be pissed to learn that his weed supply is back to home delivery.

-RZA and Common join T.I. and Denzel in "American Gangster"

-Jay-Z announces world tour dates.

-John Legend's Once Again due in October. (Plenty of good music dropping around my birthday.)

-So, how did "Snakes on a Plane" fare at the movies?

-Beyonce's B'Day dubbed a collection of "invariably tuneless songs."

-The Game called off engagement to date this chick?

Video: Lupe Fiasco ft. Pharrell - I Gotcha

Watch Lupe Fiasco's "I Gotcha" (windows media)

I would post a YouTube rip of the vid, but you already know the deal with stuff like that. As for the song, Lupe's 3 for 3 right now, even though this isn't as strong as his previous cuts.

Cuban Linx 08-21-06: Wake Up

-Welcome to U.S., the land of sex slavery

-Mixtape Monday: OutKast to work with A Tribe Called Quest. This should be interesting as long as they hide the guitar from André.

-Kelis never intended for "F**k Them Bitches" to be on her new album, explains why she dropped the Neptunes from her production crew.

-Info on Spike Lee's Katrina documentary which airs today on HBO

Pix: Radio One 25th Anniversary Award Ceremony

Featuring: Jay-Z, Beyonce, Janet, Ciara, David Banner, Diddy, and the worst rapper alive (I'll let you guess that one).

And...let's just say that Aretha Franklin looks different these days.

Oh yeah, guess who crashed OutKast's "idlewild" listening party?

Lloyd Banks - Rotten Apple Track Listing

1. Rotten Apple (feat. 50 Cent and Prodigy)
2. Make A Move
3. Survival
4. Iceman (feat. Young Buck, Scarface & Eightball)
5. Dollar Bill (feat. Rakim)
6. Help (feat. Keri Washington)
7. Addicted (feat. Musiq Soulchild)
8. Hands Up (feat. 50 Cent)
9. Stranger
10. Get Clapped (feat. Mobb Deep)
11. One Night Stand (feat. Keon Bryce)
12. NY, NY (feat. Tony Yayo)
13. Playboy Pt. 2
14. Gilmores
15. Cake (feat. 50 Cent)
16. Life (feat. Spider Loc)

Whether or not people will still believe in the G-Unit regime depends on the outcome of this Rotten Apple.

I was really rooting for Banks prior to the Hunger for More. Imagine my chagrin when his mixtape murder attitude was nowhere to be found on HFM, an album that was still two songs shy of a great effort. Then, he started taking the whole Blue Heffner thing a little too seriously...

Busta Rhymes Arrested for Assault

Sez Yahoo News:
Rapper Busta Rhymes has been arrested and charged with assault, police said Sunday.
Few details about the arrest and the attack that prompted it were immediately available, although police Officer Martin Speechley said they occurred about a week apart.

Police have been wanting to interview Rhymes since the February shooting death of one of his bodyguards, Israel Ramirez. Ramirez, 29, was killed outside a Brooklyn studio where Rhymes was recording a music video.

I was hoping they would arrest him for squandering his advance on dookie chains. I bet he'll start snitching now.

Stephon Marbury and Steve Barry Present "Starbury"

Biz Markie, Rocsi, and others were in the house to support the new clothing line by Knicks guard Stephon Marbury. $14.98 for a pair of sneaks? $9.99 for a crisp tee? How real is that?

Video: Ludacris ft. Pharrell - Money Maker

Ludameister was on a winning streak with "War with God" and "Tell it Like it Is," but he ended it with this complacent single. Still, I'm hoping he'll make me proud by emptying the vault on Release Therapy.

Weekly Contest: OutKast's "Idlewild" Giveaway

I was gunning for a Rick Ross Port of Miami CD contest this week, but when the mighty 'O''s camp makes you an offer at the last minute, you take it.

In conjunction with the good folks over at Special Ops Media, I've decided to reward five people with "Idlewild" CDs, T-shirts, and posters. All you have to do is answer three super easy questions:

1.) In the "Idlewild" movie, Antwan Patton plays the character named __________,while Andre Benjamin plays________
2.) Name OutKast's first six CDs in the order they were released
3.) What other feature films has "Idlewild" director Bryan Barber handled ?

Send your answers to rizoh1 at Gmail dot com. Please include your mailing address in the email in case you win. The first five correct entries will each receive an "Idlewild" package courtesy of The Rap Up and Special Ops Media.

Good luck!

"Idlewild" Sneak Peaks:
Funeral
Angel's Performance
Trumpy
Big Boi's Performance
Terrence Howard/Big Boi Chase Scene

UPDATE: Believe it or not we already have 5 winners. Thanks to everyone for playing. Rick Ross next week (unless Hov or Nas calls at the last minute or something.)

Cuban Linx 08-16-06: Caught Out There

Lil' Kim fresh off house arrest.

-Rick Ross "hustles" his way to the top of Billboard. Now all he has to do is "Push It" to platinum.

-Beyonce leads MOBO Awards nominations. How so? What has she done lately?

-Is Kelis cheating on Nas?

-MTV bans The Pack's "Vans" video. Received an email about this yesterday and couldn't help thinking WTF!! I mean, I just started digging the video. Prohiphop.com has the update on this.

-"Give Houston a second chance" - Beyonce's dad.

-YouTube plans to have every music video ever created within the next 18 months. Did you know that 60% of videos watched online in the U.S. are viewed on YouTube?

Video: Beyoncé - Ring the Alarm

I don't get the whole siren + screaming antics. I heard that this song has something to do with Rihanna trying to steal her man. So, yeah, that's good enough reason to get all paranoid and scream my ears out?

CL Smooth's American Me

The copy of CL Smooth's yet-to-be-released American Me that landed on my desk a couple weeks ago came without a press release. The rest of the floor-to-celing high package I received the same week were all embelished with media features, press statements, etc. Granted, this is teleological reasoning but it dawned on me that CL needs no introduction. If you're not familiar with CL Smooth by now, then you've got your work cut out for you.

American Me, CL Smooth's upcoming solo album on Shaman Works, reminds me of two things:

1)Smooth's flow hasn't changed much in ten years. That's not necessarily a bad thing, seeing as he was ahead of his peers when The Main Ingredient and Mecca & the Soul Brother dropped.

2)CL Smooth minus Pete Rock (this is going to be a hard pill for many to swallow when American Me drops) is not unlike Guru without Preem.

That said, there are plenty of souled out grooves on here.

CL Smooth - American Me
CL Smooth - I Can't Help It
CL Smooth - Smoke in the Air

Video: Obie Trice - Jamaican Girl

"Jamaican Girl" is one of several missteps on Second Round's on Me. From Eminem's regurgitation of a bootlegg Timbaland beat to Obie's elementary rhymes. Flavorless. Yet, it goes without saying that it'll quickly become a club favorite and help O. Trice go quadruple diamond in no time.

Soundbites: Akon ft. Eminem - Smack That

Akon ft. Eminem - Smack That(mp3)
I was just getting ready to unveil some brand new CL Smooth when this Akon + Eminem collabo fell out of nowhere. Never saw this one coming. Strictly designed to move your body, not your soul.

Cuban Linx 08-15-06: Gone

-Lil' Wayne arrested on drug charges.

-Janet Jackson's no longer sure they're getting married in September. It was a joke my ass.

-Bush says Isreal defeated Hezbollah. Oh Word says the debate is similar to Jay-Z vs. Nas.
My question, who's the Jigga in this situation?

-Interesting OutKast interview: Big Boi's dream role in a movie? Bill Clinton (for the obvious reason). Dre says he'd like to play Pele the great Brazillian soccer player. Negro please. Only Pele can play Pele.

-Wyclef rises "with the Sun" in Singapore. (Since will.i.am swaggerjacked him here in the U.S.)

-True to form, Kanye West storms out of Lollapalooza.

-T.I. pays tribute to Philant Johnson in his new video. I always thought "Live in the Sky" was on some prophetic sh*t a la Eminem's "Like Toy Soldiers."

-Diddy's $11 million necklace stolen. Now that's one lucky stupid thief.

Video: Lil Scrappy ft. Young Buck - Money in the Bank

For what it's worth, "Money in the Bank" is a decent single. Even the G-Unit haters can feel the trunk-friendly bassline on this. But, it needs to be said that Young Buck--whose Straight Outta Cashville debut K.O-ed every other G-Unit release--has plunged into a state of complacency lately. I've never heard a verse this terrible from him. With all that money-in-the-bank braggart, it looks like our boy Buck got rich and stopped tryin'.

Cuban Linx 08-14-06: Snakes on the Net

-Rick Ross is set to debut at No. 1 with 200,000 scans. Makes no sense at all.

-Mixtape Monday: Swizz Beatz just gave Nas four songs (say it ain't so), and will possibly collaborate with your favorite white rapper.

-Samuel L Jackson spends hours arguing with internet nerds online. Who woulda thunk it?

-Ja Rule sues shady associate; Ice Cube downplays the importance of a Black president.

-Wyclef's working on a new album, The Second Wind. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a new Fugees album.

-Scoop reviews Mobb Deep's recent concert in Auckland

--Speaking of live shows, the Wu is alive. The Chicago Tribune reviews WuTang's ODB tribute concert.

-Watch Talib Kweli's brand new video for "Listen."(windows) "Listen" is the lead single from Kwe's upcoming Eardrum album, which drops on my birthday 10-10-06.

Free's Back

Inasmuch as you would love for this post to zoom in on Free's gluteus maximus, it's far from it. Put away the dirty thoughts, let's talk music.

Free [from 106 & Park] is back in the game. (The "106 & Park" thing is necessary to distinguish her from the zillions of Frees out there.) She's been popping up on songs here and there lately. Thanks to Beauty N the Beat--which is fast emerging as a leading edge audioblog--for tipping us off on Free's latest joint, "I Love You." I'm used to "Free the rapper" not "Free the singer." So, I'm slightly taken back by this one. Will it grow on me?

I doubt it. The lyrics are too corny and the production is even cheesier. This isn't the same Free I fell in love with back when she dismembered Canibus on his own turf on "Patriots." But, I know some of you Free freaks will dig it.

As for the rest of us Free believers, enjoy these fresh odeo cookies and let me know what you think:
Canibus ft. Free - Close to Me (from Def Con Zero)
Jaz-O ft. Free - Talk to Me (supposedly from Free's World)

Soundbites: OutKast's Percival & Rooster

OutKast - Percival & Rooster (mp3)
According to the guy on the intro, this "sounds like some bullsh*t."

I couldn't have said it better myself. Sonically, this is "Idlewild Blues(Don't Chu Worry 'Bout Me) Pt.2" with a slapdash 8-bar drop from Big Sacks. At least, it's marginally better than "Hollywood Divorce."

As expected, the Idlewild O.S.T. has spilled all over the internets. The rest is between you and Google. All I can say is that Idlewild is Big Boi's revenge. Still, Dré manages to defile Boi's soundscape, ruining 90% of the CD with that experimental bullsh*t.

Thoughts.

Soundbites: Kelis ft. Nas - Blindfold Me

Kelis featuring NaS - "Blindfold Me"
This was a bad idea. The thought of Nelis trying to keep up with Jayonce is even more disturbing. The chaotic drums, the erratic horn farts, Kelis trying to channel sexy with that coarse voice that sounds like Macy Gray on sizzurp, all had me reaching for aspirin. And, did I just hear Nas say: "One minute I'm gone, next I'm re-appearing" and "I like to cover up half your face, so you're blind and can't see what I'm about to do."?

"Deja Vu" just started sounding better.

-Speaking of which, my brand new interview with Obie Trice is now up on About.com.

-Fergie tops the Hot 100 with "London Bridge." Proof that music fans are weird.

-Common's busy doing this instead of working on trying to pull off another klutzily titled, faux-classic.

-Speaking of classics, read this article before appending that label to your favorite albums.

-Terror threat ensures that Beyonce won't be going to the U.K. anytime soon.

-MTV Slammed for racist cartoon showing Black women on leashes. The real culprit here should be Snoop Dogg and every other artist who gives MTV an excuse to insult the Black community.

-According to 1280 people, the future of Hip-Hop is in the hands of this man.

Video: Busta Rhymes ft. Rick James - In the Ghetto

It must be hard being Busta right now. 4 singles, 5 music videos, still nothing to show for it. All this promotion and only 469,000 scans? Dre must really have a lot of faith in this man.

18.Fire In Ya Eyes feat. The Game, Ya Boy, & Cyssero The Virus
19.My Turn feat. The Game

Not as bad as you might expect. While JT occasionally falls back and allows his homies to shine, he always hangs around, supplying hooks, dropping commentary--kinda like playing Curtis to the click. His own solo drops are surprisingly impressive. "So High" and "My Turn" are my current favorites. Enjoy.

The Roots - Game Theory Videos

Snippets of the Roots' 3-in-video for their Game Theory campaign. I'll post the full version later.

"Don't Feel Right"

"Here I Come"

"In the Music"

"Baby" and "Long Time" would have been my preferred auxiliaries, but, I can't be mad at their decision to go with Game Theory's strongest cuts. Besides, those three videos manage to elucidate what the album is about.

-Malaysia fines Pussy Cat Dolls Organizers for "sexually suggestive routines" and skimpy outfits. Too bad they don't have fines for wacktacular performances.

-Scarface quits, blames Rap-A-Lot (in a justifiable manner, I must say.)

-Contrary to what you may have heard, The Game has no plans whatsoever to diss Dr. Dre. Or so says The Game in this video interview.

-DMX takes his 6th No. 1 debut with Year of the Dog...Again Or...maybe not.

-Diddy declared "Richest Rapper." As Spine Magazine points out, Will Smith is noticeably absent from the list.

-Rhymefest responds to his first week sales flop with a remarkably cool attitude.

-DubCnn.com is on fire lately. Peep their brilliant interview with Ice Cube

-Info on Rakim's upcoming tour and new album, The Seventh Seal.

"It's Official: OutKast Has Broken Up"... Dre Responds

We've been down this road before. C'mon OutKast, please do break up. Put your fans out of their misery, and make hip-hop proud. Sez MTV:
"Yesterday I got a phone call from Big Boi and he said that on some hip-hop Web sites that the headlines were reading something to the effect of, 'It's Official: Outkast Is Broken Up,' or something like that," Andre said. "And man, we're looking at it like, where is this sh-- coming from? I was on 'TRL' today to release a new video, and I meant to say something [about the situation] on the air. But the way they had the questions set up, I didn't have a chance to do it."

Andre says that the rumors are not just on the Internet, but very much in the streets.
"N---as hit me in the street like, 'Yeah man, I heard the bad news. Sorry to hear about that,' " Andre continued. "I'm like 'Man, what are you talking about?' Everything is still tight, most definitely."
Idlewild is their worst release so far, but, I still think OutKast is the most consistent hip-hop duo ever. (Yes, even more consistent than Guru and Preme.) However, these guys just show up to impress these days, which is understandable. I mean, I wouldn't want to mess up my promotion if I had a movie coming out.

Turning down the big 'O'; Shooting separate videos; etc, Maybe the media is scrutinizing these things a little too much. Maybe it's just the way situations present themselves. One thing's for sure, though. There are some underlying factual circumstances wrapped around these rumors. An insider once divulged to me that LaFace wouldn't let them put out solo records, because of the way their contract is set up. But, that's strictly speculation and I'm not buying it. So, if you guys know what's really going on behind the scenes, I'm all ears.

PS: I wonder which of the hip-hop sites had that screaming headline, "It's Official: OutKast has Broken Up"

"Are you sure this will help my vocals?"

1/3 of the ?uestlove-endorsed, Kanye-backed crew, Sa-Ra, and some Jack Davey-looking chick.

Update: We have a winning caption. Every single one of those captions was hilarious, but it came down to three:

2nd Runner-up: "Now I know what Paris Hilton had to go through to get a record contract" (by Renato)
1st Runner-up: "Wait ya turn, cracka ass bitches." (by Say)
Winner: Gravatar "Are you sure this will help my vocals?" (by KING of TheSmokingSection.net)

Contest: Who wants My Jurassic 5 Feedback CD?

Since most of you were digging our last contest, I've decided to turn it up a notch. I'll be running these on a weekly basis, until I run out of solid CDs to give away. I don't think anyone wants to rack their brain over a Beeda Weeda disc, for instance.

This one's easy.
  • Who replaced Cut Chemist as Jurassic 5's dj/Producer?
  • Name all 5 members of J 5. (No, T-Rex is not one of them.)
-First person to get the answers right in the comment section will receive a free copy of Feedback.
-Sorry, guys, you must be a U.S. resident to qualify.

Update: A winner has emerged. Next week, LeToya.

What's Beef...Pt. 2

What's beef?

Beef is not what Trina said to Khia, or what Khia said to Trina.
Beef is FEMA not allowing Katrina victims to talk to the media.

Beef is not Lil' Wayne vs. Gillie da Kid. It's not how much Baby just spent on his grill.
Beef is when New Orleans is still out of control.

Beef is not Googlebombing vs. George Bush. It's not Bush vs. Immigrants
Beef is these extremely disturbing images.

Beef is not what Busta Rhymes did to a gay man. Beef is not Diddy raising eyebrows again.
Beef is cops still killing young black kids.

Beef is not Method Man's scathing attack on Wendy Williams. Beef is more than what Meth said to Hov.

Beef is not what this blogger said to that blogger. Beef is not SOHH vs. XXL
Beef is when music journalism is hinged on relationships.

Beef is not NYPD vs. Malcom X's grandson Beef is not what Mel Gibson said about Jews.
Beef is when world any type of peace is far from reality.

Jay-Z Joins Kofi Annan to Fight World Water Crisis

"I am a hustla, baby; I'll sell water to a well..."

Hov el Presidente recently teamed up with UN Secretary, Kofi Annan, to get his humanitarian hustle on. Straight outta AHH:
The effort is part of MTV's ongoing mission to educate and empower young people about global issues as well as get them involved.

Jay-Z's experiences as he witnesses the human impact of the water crisis will be documented by the network. Information on the documentary and companion initiatives will also be announced.

According to recently released statistics, more than one billion people across the globe lack access to safe drinking water and water-related diseases are the leading cause of death in the world and is responsible for 80% of all sickness in the world.
It's always a good look when hip-hop heads can actually take a break from San Tropez island romps to assist less privileged folks. Cam loses again.

Soundbites: OutKast's Hollywood Divorce + The Train

OutKast ft. Lil Wayne & Snoop - Hollywood Divorce
OutKast ft. Scar & Sleepy Brown - The Train

Last week, I was talking to one of the nice folks that's handling PR for OutKast's Idlewild project. I asked her if the promo copies came in yet, and she told me they won't have it until a couple days before the release date. I thought to myself:

"Really? Only 3 weeks to go, 5 joints already leaked...yet, they won't have it for a minute?"

Crazy, huh? I wonder if the labels are cognizant of how much more publicity/coverage--good or bad--they would get by releasing advance copies, well, in advance.

Anyhow, I've only been listening to these tracks since yesterday, so, give me time to form an opinion. Your thoughts on "Hollywood Divorce" and "The Train" are welcome.

Shots Fired: Trina vs. Everybody (What's Beef)

Trina - What's Beef

Battles usually bring out the best in rappers. Even C-Listers and weed-carriers manage to somehow rise to the occasion when challenged. Not Trina. Unfortunately, she's still wacktose-infested on this here gimmick track. Talking about how much you hate a person's song is not a punch. Hey, at least she picked on people her size: Khia, B.G., and Gillie da Kid, the latter for calling out her man.

So, I guess the whole miscarriage thing was a publicity stunt as well.

Janet Jackson Vibe Magazine Cover

Wow, what a summer. The ladies have been pulling out their lion cards lately with all these nude/semi-nude poses. Is it just me or is it indicative of an ailing music industry when you have to embrace purient spreads to promote a record?

Give Me That Beat, Foo: Clipse vs Foxy Brown

I guess Pharrell should start charging a million dollars for beats (like that rumored NaS collaboration) if folks are fighting over his "Wamp, Wamp" joint:
Sez MTV
"From what I understand, the beat was originally made for Foxy Brown with Slim [already on the hook]," Pusha T said, sitting next to his brother, Malice, in New York's Battery Studio. "Then Foxy's hearing problem kicked in. After that happened, Pharrell and Jay-Z had a conversation — I wasn't there — they basically said she was counted out. We liked the beat. It was passed over."

Pusha said once Foxy's hearing was restored, Def Jam asked to have the beat back. "Jay-Z supposedly came like, 'Oh, she's back. Let's get that beat back.' That's where all the discrepancy came from."

"With us, it ain't no controversy," Malice added. "We followed the same protocol we would with any other beat. We hear it, we like it, we get it from Pharrell. We ain't go behind nobody's back to get this beat.

Give it up, Foxy. That can't possibly be the only good instrumental left on earth.

But, I wonder...who would have done justice to that beat? Clipse or Fox Boogie?
